I am sad to report that Charles Repenning, who many of us knew as 'Rep', was murdered in his home early Wednesday morning. Rep was truly one of paleontology's great players, developing almost single-handedly the sophisticated arvicoline biochronological scheme and contributing a wealth of papers on everything from shrews to pinnipeds, not only through his many years at the USGS but continually thereafter. He did his graduate work at UCMP. His most recent papers (on Porcupine Cave) were published in 2004, at the age of 81. Rep did science by looking you in the eye (usually squinting a little and with a cigarette either in his hand or mouth) and challenging you in his gravelly voice to explain your ideas in detail. When he didn't agree he told you so; he was always willing change his mind in light of new facts; and when he did agree, he was straightforward and unreserved in his compliments. Besides his paleontological accomplishments, he was a World War II war hero, surviving (and escaping from) a Nazi POW camp. His passing takes much from the paleontological community.www.9news.com
