I would
like to announce a paleontolgy-related theme session at the upcoming
North-Central Geological Society of America Meeting in Minneapolis, MN (May
19-20, 2005):
Novel
Insights Into Terrestrial and Marine Depositional Systems Through Taphonomy and
Ichnology (organized by Tim Demko, University of Minnesota Duluth and Ray
Rogers, Macalester College)
Most
earth scientists tend to view fossils from a paleobiological perspective, with
fossil material destined to decipher aspects of ancient biological phenomena
(e.g., evolution, ecology, behavior). However, ichnofossils provide otherwise
unobtainable insights into sedimentary dynamics via evidence of
organism-sediment interactions, and the taphonomy of fossils provides clues to a
wide range of biotic and abiotic processes post mortem. For this session, we
encourage submissions that focus on the use of paleontologic data in a
"non-taxonomic" fashion, especially those that address paleoenvironmental and
stratigraphic problems. Reports of actualistic studies, including neoichnology
and experimental taphonomy, are also encouraged.
This
is part of Theme Session 8 at:
http://gsa.confex.com/gsa/2005NC/top/index.epl The session is being sponsored by the Great Lakes Section of SEPM, who are also sponsoring several keynote speakers for this and other sessions at the meeting. Both
oral and poster presentations are being solicited. The abstract deadline is
February 22, 2005.
