paleonet Rare articles by Charles H. Sternberg

All,

For those of you interested in the history of paleontology in the Midwest (North America), I’ve just put two very rare articles by Charlie Sternberg up on the web… They were both published in 1899 in an obscure and short-lived journal called Popular Science News (not to be confused with Popular Science Monthly, which I did for longer than I would like to admit).

The first one is about the beautiful Protostega specimen in the Carnegie Museum:

Sternberg, C. H. 1899. The first great roof.  Popular Science News 33:126-127, 1 fig.

The second one is about a dig on a mosasaur (Platecarpus) which was sent to the University of Iowa. I’m still trying to find out more on that specimen:

Sternberg, C. H. 1899. A Kansas mosasaur. Popular Science News 33:259-260.

Both articles provide a first-hand look at how fossils were collected over a hundred years ago by one of the recognized experts. Sternberg even offers his comments about a few of the well-known paleo-personalities of the day.
