Keith Preston Young
Family-Placed Obituary
Aug. 18, 1918 - Aug. 20, 2004 Keith was born near Buffalo, Wyoming at the foot of the beautiful Bighorn Mountains to Marvin Preston Young and Belle Elgin Young. His family was in the ranching business and Keith spent much of this youth in the great outdoors of northern Wyoming. He graduated from Johnson High School in Buffalo, and became the first member of his family to attend college when he enrolled at the University of Wyoming at Laramie, where he earned his bachelors and masters degrees. During World War II, Keith served in the United States Army in Europe, rising to the rank of Captain. After the war, Keith completed his post-graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin at Madison where he earned his doctoral degree. It was in Madison that Keith met the love of his life, Ann Smedal. They were married in Madison on June 4, 1949. After their honeymoon, Keith and Ann started their new life together in Austin, Texas where Keith was employed as a professor in the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Texas. Keith taught at UT Austin for 40 years, and was also the author of numerous publications in the field of geology. He retired in 1988 as Professor Emeritus. Keith was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by Ann, his wife of 55 years; by his sons, Keith M. Young and wife Connie of Austin, Steven E. Young and wife Eleanor of Dallas, and Robert A. Young and wife Diana of Harlingen. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Matthew and Emily Young of Dallas, Julia and Robert Young of Harlingen, Marisa Ponce of Austin, and Cory and Meghan Nichols of Austin. He is also survived by his two brothers, Marvin Elgin Young and James Marshall Young of Buffalo, Wyoming. Keith was a devoted son, husband, father and grandfather and a lover of the land. We shall miss him. Memorial services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 24, 2004, in the chapel of Weed-Corley- Fish Funeral Home. Arrangements by Weed-Corley- Fish Funeral Home , 3125 N.
