RE: paleonet Word meanings

Title: Message
Nice try, but rubbish! Halimeda is from Greek halimos, "of the sea, marine". I'm not sure where the -eda comes from.

Halimeda
-- halys, =i, =is (Greek). A chain, bond.
-- mede, =a (Greek). The genitals.

This according to my Dictionary of Word Roots and Combining Forms.

Dear Paleonetters,

Following the recent thread on 'word meanings', I wonder if I could ask the list for the origin/meaning of Halimeda, the calcareous green alga of the tropics.

Thanks to all.

Sincerely,

Oliver
