SCIENCE COORDINATOR (m/f)

The Institute of Earth Sciences of the Faculty comprises a total of 100 academic staff, organized in eight departments, each headed by a full professor and 60 technical and administrative staff. The Institute is well equipped with an extensive array of analytical, experimental and computational facilities. The appointee will be Science Coordinator for the ECORD Science Support and Advisory Committee (ESSAC). ESSAC is the science committee of the European Consortium for Ocean Research Drilling (ECORD), group of 15 European member countries, which is member of the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) with the partner Japan and the USA. ESSAC is responsible for the scientific planning and coordination of Europe's contribution to and participation in IODP. The main purpose of ESSAC is to maximize ECORD's scientific and technological contribution. The ESSAC Office is located with the Department of Sedimentology, which is involved in multidisciplinary process-orientated research, and staff members teach courses in a broad array of sedimentary geology, both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The starting date of the position is April 1st 2004 and the duration of the position is 1,5 years.

Tasks
The Science Coordinator is full time scientific secretary to the ESSAC Chairman. Tasks include the daily management of the ESSAC office, communication with the ESSAC members, secretarial and organizational support of the Committee meetings, preparation of policy reports, project acquisition. It is desired, unless interfering with the general and specific tasks that the Science Coordinator is actively involved in academic research in IODP science themes for a minimum of 0.2 FTE or 1 day per week.

Requirements
Demonstrable scientific qualities in the area of Earth Sciences and the capability to function in a multidisciplinary internationally oriented research environment. He/she has a background in Earth Sciences with a PhD degree, is fluent in English and has excellent (verbal and written) communicative skills. Experience in management and science communication is required. Flexibility and professional autonomy are important assets. Knowledge of the Dutch language is not initially required.

Salary
Depending on qualifications, maximum ¤ 4027 bruto per month, at full-time employment, corresponding to salary scale 11 of the Dutch Universities Collective Labor Agreement.
