Dear all,
I am trying to figure out something about
the types of the fish species 'Anenchelum glarisianum' (also known as
'Lepidopus glarisianus'). Most of you probably never heard of this, but maybe
there's someone who has some answers (which may even be obvious-but I
haven't found 'em so far). Anenchelum glarisianum nov gen nov. sp. was described
by de Blainville (1818) in his 'Nouvelle Dictionnaire d'Histoire Naturelle',
from the Oligocene Glanerschiefers of Canton Glarus, Switzerland (it has been
found elsewhere later). Some of his material is in BMNH, but I haven't
found any specimens there that are indicated or described as types of A.
glarisianum. Woodward (1901, Cat. Foss.
Fish. BMNH) only says that the type is an 'imperfect fish'. Thus, de
Blainville's 'types' of this species were, I suppose, in the collections of
Caen University (World Palaeontological Collections, 1983), which were destroyed
during the war. This means that lectotypes should have been assigned, but I
haven't found any reference to this. If anyone knows something and can tell me,
I'd be grateful.
Ken
