Ideally, discussing 'evolutionism' and creationism
on PaleoNet shouldn't be needed. Ideally, one should be able to think here: 'let
everyone believe what he or she believes; there's no reason to discuss anything.
Unfortunately the creationist attacks imply that palaeontology is an invalid
science, nay, is even non-science. If creationism is just a small bunch of
people shouting in the desert, trying to have their non-science accepted as
truth, palaeontologists could be excused for shruging their shoulders and
carrying on regardless. But what is happening in Georgia is once more evidence
that the matter is more serious; that creationism is, at least in some places,
powerful and influential. Is it so unthinkable that in a while from
now geology and palaeontology Departments have to be shut down, if a
creationist lobby manages to stop NSF funds or convinces Bush that these
are 'Sciences of Evil'? Of course this is a bit tongue in cheek, but creationism
may in the future indeed seriously threaten our very profession in
some parts of the world. That is why it's good to discuss the matter within
the palaeo-community. This list is however not the place to have a go at
christianity. This is not ChristianBashingNet, but PaleoNet. Let us not confuse
christianity with creationism. The way I believe, creationism is an
unhealthy subset of pseudo-christianity. But if postings on PaleoNet
are analysing the phenomenon of CREATIONISM and what this may imply to
us, that's fine-It's even necessary if you ask me.
