paleonet Use of Plaster jackets?



All,
I recently came across an 1884 article (citation below) by Charles H.
Sternberg where he mentions (page 221) the use of plaster for preserving
fossils in the field.

Sternberg, C. H., 1884. Directions for collecting vertebrate fossils. Kansas
City Review of Science and Industry
 8(4):219-221.

I was curious to know if anyone interested in paleo-history has an earlier
reference, or other references, to the use of plaster for jacketing fossils?

The brief Sternberg article also provides a rather interesting description
of the rigors of fossil collecting in the American Midwest in the 1880s.
