Check out Hildegarde Howard's work for UCLA, Cal.MNH, Smithsonian, DeLacoure's
"Waterfowl of the World," Vol.IV, Fossil Birds of Oregon, etc. She was a giant in the field, had a double degree in avian paleontology, received every award in the field.
Her work is not outdated and the most extensive in the field of waterfowl, which includes some of the biggest birds, ancient and still with us-like swans, of which many, many have been found from the Miocene-forward, in this country(Florida,
Oregon, California,Idaho, Arizona.) and include Trympeters, Mutes and Tundra.
Studies on this go back to the mid 1800s and large specimens are still housed in
major collections here and in other countries. Also, check out Kata McCarville at
So.Dakota SM&T, a PhD specializing in avian paleontology.
