The Micropalaeontological Society's Foraminiferal Group (TMS-FG) Spring Meeting will take place on Friday, 25th and Saturday the 26th of April, 2003, at the GEOMAR Research Center for Marine Geosciences in Kiel, Germany. *** Last call for abstracts. *** If you have not submitted an abstract then there is still time. A short email indicating whether you are likely to attend would also be very helpful. Please visit The Micropalaeontological Society's website http://www.tmsoc.org and follow links to the foram group for recent updates. Programme Outline: Friday 25th April: Presentations, GEOMAR Research Center for Marine Geosciences (with thanks to Joachim Schoenfeld and colleagues). AM: Oral presentations. Coffee break Oral presentations Lunch Break and Poster session PM: Oral presentations. 5pm - 7pm Collections Visit at the Institute of Geoscience, Christian-Albrechts-Universitaet Kiel (with thanks to Wolfgang Kuhnt, Ann Holbourn and colleagues). Including: * Recent benthic foraminifers from the Baltic Sea (Lutze-collection, and historical material from Rhumbler) * Recent benthic foraminifers from the eastern North Atlantic (Lutze collection) * Recent foraminifers from the South China Sea (Sonne cruises 95, 114, 132 and 140, including the Mt. Pinatubo ash recolonization study) * Cretaceous benthic foraminifers from N-Germany * Cretaceous benthic foraminifers from W-Africa, the Western Mediterranean and the Atlantic ocean. 7pm + Wine Reception in the Museum. Saturday 26th April - Field Excursions. (with thanks to Joachim Schoenfeld and colleagues). * 1. The Bottsand Lagoon in the Baltic to the north of Kiel, where shallow water to saltmarsh foraminiferal assemblages have been studied by Lutze (1968) and quite recently by Lehmann (2000) in his PhD study. * 2. The tidal flats and marshes at Schobüll (close to Husum, North Sea) with interesting saltmarsh foraminiferal assemblages that were also described by Lehmann (2000). * 3. The Schlei Fjord, a brackish environment with wind-dried wadden flats, lagoons etc. There is a GEOMAR field station here where bottom samples may be taken from a research vessel. Maximum participants would be limited to 6 people defined by the size of the boat. * 4. The chalk quarries of Lägerdorf. The entire Campanian and Lower Maastrichtian is currently exposed, and there are recent extensions of the quarry into the polyplocum Zone. Which field excursions run will obviously depend on interest and response. Transport: The closest Airports to Kiel are Lübeck (RyanAir cheapest flight 20GBP from UK) or Hamburg. Both of these airports have transport links to Kiel. Accommodation: A list of hotels is posted on the GEOMAR website with details of transport to and from the research Center. (http://www.geomar.de/howtogeomk/howtosatzmk.html ) Further information is also included on TMS website http://www.tmsoc.org regarding holiday flat rental (a cheaper option for 3 or more people). Abstracts: All TMS-FG 2003 abstracts will be published on TMS website. Students and professionals are encouraged to present updates of their research, techniques, industrial applications, software, movies, etc. Anyone wishing to contribute a short (15 - 20 minutes) technical presentation (or present a poster) should submit an abstract to Andy Henderson (see abstract format and address below). Also please will you indicate preferences for the field excursion. Regards, Andy Henderson. Chairman, TMS Foram.
