paleonet Palaeontology versus Geography versus Cultural Respect Versus Politics

Hi everybody!

I have had some hot discussions and agreements with many colleagues in my
private email about amn issue which, I think is worthy to bring up to the
list.

There are only eight nations in the world that possess their own states,
although they also contain many regional cultures. The classical example is
Portugal. However, many of the States are formed by Stateless nations,
usually not represented properly by the States, that tend to give an image
of the nation that dominates that State .These have to be dramatic
differenciated from regional cultures. The classical examples are the
Spanish and Bristish State. The first contain Euskadi (Basc Country),
Catalonia, and Gallicia, nations possessing their own language, way of
living...Even though Spain is basically known by its Castilian language and
culture(proper name of Spanish). The second contains England, North of
Ireland, Scotland and Wales, and like the first the British State is well
dominated by the English culture. Moreover, all these States and nations are
in geopraphical units, such as the Iberian Peninsula and The Bristish
Islands.

The point is that when you find a fossil, or tell where a scientists comes
from. What is the most correct way of locating both? In my case I use the
geopraphy first, for example Iberian Peninsula or British Isles, then, the
nation that legally owns or the fossil is located, for example Catalonia or
Scotland, putting in brackets the State that they are within, (Spanish
State)and(Bristish State), although unnecesary as you have indicated first
the geographical area. The same case for names, in my case tha I am
Anglo-Catalan, I would say I am from England and Catalonia within the
Spanish State and Bristish State respectively, but never Spanish or
Bristish.I also use the name of the nations/culture as repect towards them.

The point is that many people have insulted me as integrist,
nationalist...Or corrected in my submitted papers Spain instead of Catalonia
and so on. Hence, people think in politics unrespecting science and people
feelings.

I think the most correct way of locating a fossil or being is always using
the geography as I do to avoid any political discussion. Then, the
national/cultural area mentioning the state, although voluntarily, as I way
of respecting other people's culture. Finally, to respect this in submitted
papers. However, I would like to know whether there is a norm/law/way or no,
whether dictates how scientitsts ought to act about this issue.

Finally, I would like to apologise to anybody if my words bring any
equivocal bad feelings.

Respectfully,

Xavier Panades I Blas, Ms
