Greetings! You may want to consider a program called GRASS GIS (Geographic Resources Analysis Support System). It was developed by some of the same people who programmed ArcView, but costs surprisingly little: nothing.... free.... You can find it at this address: http://grass.baylor.edu/ Additionally, it runs on a large number of different operating systems. I think this will serve you well for you biogeographic data.
