paleonet Software fix for depthy-of-field problems in digital photos

Hello --

How many of you use digital photos of fossils that have depth-of-field
problems? Particularly under a microscope, it often takes several
images taken at different levels to bring the entire image into focus.
It seems that cheap software should be available for combining images
into a mosaic that contains only the focuses elements of each picture. I
searched the net looking for such a product, and found a product called
Auto Montage:

The pictures can be quite startling and contain a large amount of
scientific information. However, the software costs $4500. Is anybody
aware of a cheaper software solution for the problem of combining
digital photos taken at different focus planes? Thanks.
