The web site is devoted to the middle Pleistocene site of Atapuerca near the pilgrim's way of Saint James (Camino de Santiago)
in Northern Spain. The site was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Two human species inhabited Atapuerca
Homo antecessor (about 800.000 ybp) and
H. heidelbergensis (about 400.000 ybp). Some of these fossils were tomographied. After that, prepared the virtual fossils by using specialized software (for details see Dominguez et. al. 2002, Nature 417: 841-844). In these pages, you can see reduced versions of the models we are using for the web.
