A series of news from the IFAA

Dear Phycologists,

This is to recap some news and announcements with respect to the IFAA and
the related site developments.
For an unknown reason, we are experimenting some problems at our main site
with the java links (fphover.class); I guess I shall fix it very soon.
To date, there are 95 people registered to the CALCALGA list!
The IFAA member database, a distinctive feature, has been announced by
Michael Rasser (who is behind this project). It is coming with a full
membership to the IFAA and please note that there are no registration fees.
You will be ask to fill a form online (if you don't have access to the web
pages, we might send you a form on request that you will return to us
through the e-mail). (Free) Membership is open; it is not restricted to the
"fossil algae" people!
Our affiliate ring of websites, namely "Fossil and Modern Algae", is fully
operational with a set of 9 sites [Dina Mandoli, Ed Drew, Bruno Granier,
Andre Hospers, Michael Rasser, and Michael Schudack].
I attached the 3rd / last circular for the IFAA 4th regional meeting in Cluj
(next September) at the end of this message.
Whole parts of our parent site and of some affiliates are on the move to the
IMBI server. IMBI stands for International Marine Biodiversity Initiative.
The IMBI softwares and web site are a volunteer service provided by the
International Ocean Institute Regional Operational Centre for Southern
Africa at the University of the Western Cape. They are designed to
facilitate online collaboration for small groups (working together,
developing short-term projects, staying in touch with each other, sharing
images, documents, comments, etc.). "I guess" Derek Keats, who is behind
most of it, should give us a report on the latest developments within the
coming days (hours). Actually that is the best place where to build a
reference image-library (for instance, it would be great to build an
image-library for the types - holotypes, paratypes, neotypes, ... - of our
fossil calcareous algae), and to develop much more projects. The web is
there to speed up things ...
On July 16th, a new gallery with Western Pacific Crustose Corallines has
been added to the site. This photo-album, which includes 18 images, is based
on material provided by Derek Keats and his colleagues from the IMBI
Workshop on Coralline Algae recently held in Kenting, Taiwan. It is the
first gallery hosted at the IMBI.
I can also announce that we have a gallery nearing completion from Emile Nat
on Dutch modern Charophytes.
*<:o)) I have recently loaded some java/javascript based entertainment (a
Memory and 2 Metamorphosis games in addition to the existing one: the
Bornetella jelly!) to our parent site. ((o:>*
Globochaete alpina gets striking affinities to bacterially-induced CaCO3
(bio-) crystals! Let us check it with 34 S.E.M. pictures brought to us by
Gérard Bignot and uploaded to our Gallery on July 3rd, 2001.
On June 24th, thanks to the Geological Survey of Austria [Geologische
Bundesanstalt], the original German version of 1874 paper by C.W. Gümbel was
made available to our Library. It can be downloaded in the form of a 'pdf'
file (12KB) from the IFAA Library; you will need a copy of Adobe Acrobat
Reader version 4 or higher.
On June 22nd, two new galleries have been added to the site: the first
gallery with (mostly) Paleocene Algae (14 pictures) is inherited from - our
colleague - Graham F. Elliott's collection; the second gallery deals with
Holocene Acetabulariacean remains (5 S.E.M. pictures only).

YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS / IDEAS / FEEDBACK ARE MOST WELCOME!

Best regards,
Bruno
