INTERNATIONAL SUBCOMMISSION ON SILURIAN STRATIGRAPHY SW IBERIA FIELD MEETING 1998 Ossa Morena Zone, Portugal and Spain June 15-18th, 1998 FIRST CIRCULAR As was advanced through Silurian Times No. 5 (January 1997), the Iberian Peninsula was elected as the site for the Silurian 1998 Field Meeting (the biennial field conference of the ISSS). It will highlight important Silurian sections (very complete and continuous, and in Mediterranean facies) of the Ossa Morena Zone in SW Spain and Portugal. Its schedule between the 15th and 18th of June has been coordinated with two other international meetings on fossil groups very important for Silurian correlation: the 6th International Graptolite Conference (GWG-IPA: June 19th-22nd) and the 7th Conodont Symposium held in Europe (ECOS VII: June 24-26th). We will try to coordinate schedules so that members of the Silurian Subcommission and other working groups will be able to attend most other meetings. Due to limited space (maximum of 60 places), first priority of registration to the Silurian Meeting goes to Titular Members of the Silurian Subcommission (IUGS), next Corresponding Members of same and graptolite workers (GWG-IPA), and finally interested nonmembers. ORGANIZING COMMITTEE - Jose Manuel PIC,ARRA (Beja, Portugal), Co-chair and corresponding member of the Silurian Subcommission. - Juan Carlos GUTIERREZ-MARCO (Madrid, Spain), Co-chair and corresponding member of the SSS. - Isabel RABANO (Madrid, Spain), Treasury/Secretary - Alfred LENZ (London, Canada), Technical Programme Coordinator - Tomas OLIVEIRA (Lisbon, Portugal) - Michel ROBARDET (Rennes, France), Field Programme Coordinator - Graciela SARMIENTO (Madrid, Spain) - Petr STORCH (Prague, Czech Republic) REGISTRATION AND COSTS The registration fee for those attending exclusively the Field Meeting of the ISSS will be 6.000 Spanish pesetas (over 40 US$), and includes the receipt of a special volume, which will be produced jointly with the Graptolite Conference, and will combine the extended abstracts and the field trip guides presented at both meetings. A provisional estimation of the full cost for the Silurian Field Meeting (including the above mentioned registration fee, transports -high speed train ticket, coach travel-, lodging -also in Madrid for the night before-, meals and festivities) is in the range of 45.000-50.000 pesetas (approximately equivalent to 300-350 US$, based on the official exchange rate at the end of July, 1997: 35-50 US$ less for those registered also in the Graptolite Conference). The booking form with final prices will be included in the next circular. Once we known the provisional number of participants, we will try to get lower prices by means of group discounts, as well as official subsidies. PRELIMINARY SCHEDULE - Monday, June 15th, 1998: Technical sessions of the Silurian Subcommission, including oral and poster presentations, to be held in the historical head office of the Athenaeum of Madrid in the city centre. In the evening, participants will take the high speed train (AVE) to Seville in Andalousia (538 km, 3 hours travel). From there, a bus will transport the group to a refurbished monastery in the mountains near the town of Cazalla de la Sierra, in the heart of the Sierra Norte Natural Park (within Sierra Morena). - Tuesday, June 16th: Beginning of the joint field trip of the Silurian Subcommission and Graptolite Working Group. Spectacular Lower Silurian to Lower Devonian sections north of El Pintado reservoir (west of Cazalla de la Sierra) with continuous exposure of black, graptolitic shales. Sections include two calcareous intervals with Ludlow and Pridoli conodonts and shelly faunas (bivalves, cephalopods, echinoderms, trilobites, ostracodes, brachiopods). More than 18 graptolite zones can be examined, including those around major biotic and environmental crises, as well as the O/S and S/D boundaries. Workers with interest in Upper Ordovician conodonts and micro-brachiopods will also have a special stop. In our second night at the monastery, we will enjoy a genuine flamenco spectacle, generously provided by the kind people of Cazalla de la Sierra. - Wednesday, June 17th: Study of similar Silurian sections in the nearby Cerron del Hornillo syncline (same facies along roadside exposures), as well as Ashgill limestones (conodonts) overlain by Hirnantian shales, and Lochkovian graptolitic black shales south of El Pintado reservoir. After lunch, travel by bus to the early Ordovician Barriga shales near Aracena (province of Huelva) with Hunnebergian graptolites. In late evening we will reach Moura (Alentejo region, Portugal), where we will spend the night, and enjoy traditional Portuguese sights. - Thursday, June 18th: In the morning, we will study the best Silurian sections in the Barrancos region (Llandovery to Pridoli along roadcuts). After lunching in the picturesque town of Barrancos, we will spend the afternoon travelling a short distance (139 km) to the 2.000 year old city of Merida (Spain), followed by a 340 km journey to Madrid (entirely by superhighway). End of Silurian Field Trip, returning to Madrid the night prior to the opening of the Graptolite Conference (Friday, June 19th). ABSTRACTS A limited number of contributions will be accepted for oral or poster presentation in the indoor meeting programmed for Monday, 15th June in Madrid. Abstracts can deal with any ttopic related with Silurian research: the contribution should not exceed four A4 pages, including references and line drawings, and should be sent both in diskette and hard copy form, according to the instructions to be comunicated in the next Circular. If neccessary, a maximum of one photographic plate accompanying each short article can be published at the special volume of the meeting. However, the total number of plates needs to be known to work out the total costs. We, therefore, strongly encourage you to indicate your requirement on the enclosed questionnaire. No publication other than the special volume distributed at the time of the meeting will be further produced. Due to imperatives imposed to the organization, participants intending to present an abstract are *encouraged to submit the provisional title(s) and author(s) before November 15th, 1997*. These are needed before asking the Spanish Ministry of Education and Culture for funds. A provisional programme must be submitted to the Ministry before November 30th!. OTHER INFORMATION For a more precise account regarding the publication of the special volume of abstracts and the field trip guide, travel grants, daily budget needed for accommodation and food, Iberian weather and the coordination with both the graptolite and conodont international meetings in Spain and Italy, respectively, see in the attached first circular of the Graptolite Conference. To take advantage of your attendance to the Iberian meeting of the Subcommission, the organizing committee strongly recommends you to try to arrange a one or two days visit to the EXPO'98 of Lisbon (Portugal), the last World Exposition of the 20th century, dedicated to the theme "The Oceans, a Heritage for the Future".
