One simple solution to this problem is already avalable - the digest mode.
If asked the listserver will stop sending you every message instantly but
save them up and send them as a single "digest" message once a day instead
(with the unambiguous header PALEONET digest). This mode saves most of the
problems associated with the sheer volume of paleonet mail. Also to date I
have never had the blank header problem when using the digest mode, but
that may just be because the listserver likes the NHM for some reason.

To change to digest mode...
send the following message

set paleonet mail digest

to

listproc@ucmp1.Berkeley.EDU

N.B. Other useful commands you can send to the listserver include

unsubscribe paleonet
-----------------
To remove yourself from the list.

recipients paleonet
-----------------
Returns a listing of all non-concealed people subscribed to the list.

help
-----------------
Returns a message with information on available commands.
