PaleoNet mail settings

It has come to my attention that the PaleoNet subscription routines have
recently "decided" to set the "mail noack" switch for new subscribers. This
means that for all addresses so set any postings those subscribers make to
the list will not be bounced back to them during the regular mail
distribution cycle. Your message will go out to everyone else on the list,
it will just not be returned to your address.

The "correct" subscription routine should set the mail switch to "ack"
which means that a copy of your message will be bounced back to your
address. We've no idea when the change was made, so we have no idea how
many addresses might be affected. Regardless, it's an easy matter to check
the mail setting for your address and change it to the mode you would
prefer. Note that if you never post any messages to the list (and never
intend to) it doesn't matter what the mail setting is for your address.
However, I encourage everyone to check their settings on an occasional
basis to make sure that the list performs according to your
needs/expectations. As always a complete User's Guide for the PaleoNet list
is available at...

http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/Paleonet/Listservers/PaleoNet.Html (PaleoNet West)
http://www.nhm.ac.uk/paleonet/Listservers/PaleoNet.Html (PaleoNet East)

Now, how to check and/or change your mail settings.

Subscribers can instruct Listproc to send them a summary of their address'
current option settings by submitting the command...

set PaleoNet

...to the PaleoNet Server address...

Listproc@ucmp1.Berkeley.edu

No other text should be included on the command line and the command text
is not case sensitive.

A typical setting summary might look like this:

ADDRESS = J.BLOGGS@NOWHERE.GEOLOGY.EDU
MAIL = NOACK
PASSWORD = CONVERSE
CONCEAL = NO

Since the mail setting is "noack" Prof. Bloggs will not receive copies of
any messages he sends to PaleoNet, even though his messages will be
distributed to all other list addresses.

If Prof. Bloggs wants to receive copies of his messages (so he can be sure
they were posted correctly) he would need to change his mail setting. This
is done by sending the following command...

set PaleoNet mail ack

...to the PaleoNet Server address...

Listproc@ucmp1.Berkeley.edu

Once again, no other text should be included on the command line and the
command text is not case sensitive.

That's it. If anyone has any problems with the procedure, or any problems
at all with their PaleoNet subscription, please let me know about it. We
will reset the subscription procedure (so that all new subscriber mail
switches are set to "ack") asap.
