Foram. Ph.D. Studentship, University College London

Benthic foraminiferal Biostratigraphy and Palaeobathymetry of the Upper
Cretaceous Shetland Group in the northern Viking Graben and West of
Shetlands Area

The candidate will investigate the Upper Cretaceous foraminiferal
biostratigraphy of the deep-marine Shetland Group from the southern
Norwegian Sea area. The purpose of the study will be (1) to set up a
taxonomic data base of Late Cretaceous Deep-Water Agglutinated Foraminifera
(2) to revise the Upper Cretaceous biostratigraphy of the Shetland Group,
and (3) to collect quantitative data on foraminiferal distribution related
to palaeobathymetry in the Late Cretaceous seaway between Scotland and
Greenland. The candidate will collect and compile micropalaeontological
data from released exploration wells housed in the collections of the
British Geological Survey in Edinburgh and at the Natural History Museum in
London.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in foraminiferal
micropalaeontology and/or other relevant experience. The Ph.D. studentship
is open to any UK or EEC resident, and will be funded for a total of three
years. The doctoral stipend will be awarded at the standard scale for
NERC-CASE studentships (£7.7k for 1997-98), and an additional allowance
will be budgeted for essential travel. The candidate will carry out part of
the research at Saga Petroleum in Oslo, Norway.

The project will be carried out at University College London, and will be
supervised by Dr. M.A. Kaminski (UCL) and Dr. F.M. Gradstein (Saga
