Ten years ago, Colin Patterson edited a book : Molecules and Morphology in
Evolution: Conflict or Compromise? that constituted the first in depth
confrontation of the virtues of molecular versus morphological data in the
reconstruction of phylogeny. We wish to update this confrontation in
1997,taking into account the wealth of new molecular evidence that has
accumulated, the numerous taxa that have been reanalyzed using cladistic
methods, and the extensive work going on concerning the reliability and
limits of resolution of phylogenetic trees.

Among the new approaches which we wish to emphasize is the use of
developmental characters : themes such as the number and order of genes in
Hox complexes, the domains of expression of developmental genes and their
bearing on questions of homology, etc. will be on the agenda. Other major
themes encompass coping with conflict between independant estimates of
phylogeny, methodology of choice and use of molecular characters (including
alignment), total evidence and dealing with large databases, role of
palaeontological, behavioural or ecological data in phylogenetic studies,
and molecular characterization of taxa.

About the meeting

The different topics:
1. Developmental genes and homology
2. Methodology of choice and use of molecular characters (including
        alignment)
3. Coping with conflict between independent estimates of phylogeny
4. Total evidence and dealing with large databases
5. Role of palaeontological, behavioral or ecological data in phylogenetic
        studies
6. Molecular characterization of taxa

Communications:

Papers will be given in a single session (no parallel sessions).
3 invited papers (45 mn each) per day 10 to 15 contributed papers (15 to 20
mn, depending on the number and subject of papers proposed) every day.

These times include discussion. Both slide and overhead projectors are
available (if other special equipments are required (video, computers),
please mention it in the enclosed form, and we shall do our best to get
 them).

Official languages: the official languages will be English and French.

Posters: No poster session will be organized.

Abstracts: all papers must be presented by an abstract. Deadline for
abstracts: 15 february 1997, after or with confirmation of registration.
Every abstract consists in 10 lines in english. An abstract booklet will be
given to all participants.

Administrative informations

The number of participants is limited to 200. Definitive registration is
made in the order of arrival of pre-registrations, as far as received sooner
than the deadline (as of 1 november 1996, 90 potential speakers have
pre-registered).

Deadline for definitive registration: 15 february 1997.

Selection of papers presented: if more papers than can be presented within
the time schedule are proposed , the scientific committee will select
communications.

Publication: Papers will be published in a special issue of Molecular
Phylogenetics and Evolution, after selection by the Scientific Committee and
normal refereeing procedure.

Registration fees: 600 FF or 120 USD (full fee)
300 FF or 60 USD (students)

Payments: Registration fees must be paid when definitive registration is
made. Payment can be made by cheque to the order of "Societe Francaise
de Systematique". Postal cheques are preferred to bank cheques if possible as
allowing reduction of transaction fees. No refunding will be made after the
1st March, 1997. Congress dinner may be paid at the congress venue.

Congress Dinner: Wednesday 26 march at 19h30 in the Grande Galerie de
l'Evolution in the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle.
Price: 250 FF/pers

Travel insurance: The organizing committee can not be held responsible for
any accident or injury that may happen to the registered participants during
the meeting. Therefore, we recommend that you subscribe a personal travel
insurance before you leave your country or enquire on the bilateral
agreement between French health insurance and your country.

Currency: Foreign currencies and travellers cheques are changed in banks and
change offices. Hotels generally accept cash in French Francs, credit cards,
and sometimes travellers cheques. The present rate of the French Franc is
about 5FF for one USD.

Accomodation: Enclosed is a list of hotels located around the meeting place.
Current prices per night are indicated (add 2 or 3% to get 1997 prices), as
well as phone and fax numbers. We would appreciate if you make reservations
by yourself.
In France, class of Hotels is indicated by one to five stars (*). If you
phone or fax from a foreign country, dial 33-and the phone or fax number
without the first 0. It is recommended to book hotel rooms as early as
possible because the congress takes place during a holiday period. In case
of problem, please do not hesitate to contact us. We will do our best to
help you.

Students: A few grants including 5000 FF and registration fees are offered
to doctoral or young postdoctoral students. Application can be made to the
secretariat not later then the 10th of January for submission to the
scientific committee.
