Actually, NASA's schedule of Mars launches was set, funding-wise, well
before the announcement. Two missions are to be launched this year, with a
series to follow, possibly culminating in a manned mission within 15 years.
Maybe they needed to justify the spending before another mission screw-up?
Also, a local science reporter asked me some questions about all of this,
and when I asked, "Do you remember cold fusion?", the answer was... you
guessed it. "No. Not really."
