Rich Lane hrlane@amoco.com NOTES ON THE IBC MEETING OF JUNE 17, 1996 Hosted by BP Exploration-Houston Attendees: Tony Gary, John Packard, Eileen Williams, and Dave Vork of Unocal, Brian O'Neill of Shell Offshore (SOI), Lori Glassgold of Shell Western (SWEPI), Pete McLaughlin of Exxon, Rich Lane and Dick White of Amoco, Sally Zellers of Texaco, Bob Young of Phillips, Ron Waszczak of Conoco, Ron Morin of Mobil, and James Newell and Sheila Barnett of BPX. Guests were Hilary Olson of UT-Austin and Glen Johnson of the University of Utah. The agenda included: . a status report on the IPS System and the proposed consortium presented by Tony Gary. . a summary of the accomplishments of the IBC Group over the past year and a half (report to follow) . a planning session for goals and objectives for the remainder of 1996 and 1997 (report to follow) . a report back from the NAPC in Washington by the attendees including a recap of Rich Lane's presentation on the state of paleo collections in the industry . a brief review of the status of the taxonomic equivalency project The next meeting will be held at Texaco - Houston on August 13, 1996. 1995 / 96 Accomplishments 1. organized 2 technical sessions at NAPC and solicited funding from several of the companies 2. organized 2 oral and 2 poster sessions at the 1995 AAPG 3. sponsored a meeting with representatives of government, industry and academia at the AAPG 1995 4. jump started the taxonomic equivalency project 5. began a vendor directory of services 6. began planning the Paleontology in the 21st Century Conference to be held in Frankfurt 7. began sending out the IBC meeting notes on PaleoNet and in the AASP newsletter 8. made 3 presentations to the Paleo Lunch Bunch in Houston 9. sharing of paleo charts between companies 10.3 biostrat positions filled at least partly through assistance of IBC 11. agreement reached to share non-proprietary sample inventory information to facilitate trades 12. addressed the issue of sample processing quality 13. continued to raise biostratigraphy's profile within industry 14. field trip and lunchtime IBC session at 1996 AAPG 1996 / 1996 GOALS 1. inventory and summarize the recent new hires and summer hires in industry and what their background is 2. canvass graduate programs in stratigraphy / paleo and provide results to hiring groups in the companies 3. provide the universities information on what the industry is looking for; also recruiting guidelines 4. take a look at other applications of paleo outside the oil industry such as environmental or econolgical studies 5. develop ideas to influence management to retain / acquire analysts (and taxonomists) so as not to lose this important capability 6. go through a SWOT analysis on "paleo in industry circa 1996" 7. complete the vendor directory, getting input from as many as want to contribute information 8. get several biostrat application papers submitted to the general sessions for AAPG 1997 9. begin planning for 1998 AAPG in Salt Lake City 10. do a presentation for the Paleo Lunch Bunch on Aug 13th and 2 presentations in 1997 11. Brian O'Neill to present at teachers' workshop at GSA in No. 1996 12. continue with sample collections inventory 13. 1997 GCAGS in New Orleans - Brian O'Neill is overseeing efforts 14. participate in Forams 98 in Monterrey, Mexico Respectfulluy submitted, Sheila Barnette, BP Exploration
