>relies >on access to browser capabilities (e.g., Java) that are only available in >the latest generation of WWW browsers and personal computer operating >systems. Probably one of the main obstacles to electronic publishing is the rapidly shifting nature of the technology. Anyone can pick up a journal and look at the photos, if not read it. However, there are currently myriad possible ways to put something on the Net, many of which are mutually incompatible, obscure, or otherwise less useful than they seem. Is there any way to have a standardized format for journals? Ideally, the necessary software and hardware for reading or downloading electronic journals would be both inexpensive and easy to find, yet able to manage large and complicated files (3-D images, etc.). I've often tried to get a file which required downloading some program from the Net and then been unable to download the other program (address changed, downloaded file never appears at my computer, etc.).
