In a few hours control of the PaleoNet listserver will be handed over to the Berkeley Museum of Paleontology. Rob Guralnick (Berkeley), Sean Steppie (NHM), and I have all been working behind the scenes to make sure the transfer goes smoothly. The organization of PaleoNet's move to Berkeley took longer than we originally thought because of several factors, including the time delay between Berkeley and London. Although we've tried to think of everything that might go wrong, there's always a chance that we've overlooked something. Therefore, please excuse any "unusual" behavior exhibited by PaleoNet over the next 24 hours. If problems do crop up we'll fix them as soon as we can. I'll be posting a PaleoNet User's Guide to the list and on the PaleoNet Forum early next week. These will contain descriptions of and instructions for using PaleoNet's new and/or altered features. For the time being, though, you may want to take note of the following. 1.) Any message posted to PaleoNet at the old (NHM) address should be automatically routed to the new (Berkeley) address. If everything works correctly no messages should be lost or bounced back to you. 2.) With the exception of anyone who subscribed or unsubscribed today (1 Feb.), all PaleoNet subscribers should receive all messages emanating from the Berkeley PaleoNet address. There should only be a one-day delay in getting today's new subscribers/unsubscribers on/off the Berkeley list. 3.) The new PaleoNet address is... PaleoNet@ucmp1.berkeley.edu After 6:00 PM today (London time) all new PaleoNet messages should be routed to this address. 4.) Complete subscription/unsubscription information for the Berkeley PaleoNet listserver is available now on the PaleoNet Pages at... http://www.nhm.ac.uk/paleonet/Listservers/PaleoNet.Html More information will be available next week (see above). 5.) If you send a subscription/unsubscription request to the old (NHM) PaleoNet address, it will be dealt with, but this may involve a slight (1/2 day) time delay. 6.) A PaleoNet Digest including all messages up to the time of the move will be sent out to digest subscribers at the beginning of next week. 7.) The original PaleoNet reply default (= replies routed directly to the list) will be reinstated at the time the Berkeley network takes control of PaleoNet. Berkeley's listserver software (Listproc) has extensive bounce-loop protection so these should not be a problem for PaleoNet at the Berkeley site. 8.) For the time being the PaleoNet Pages will remain at the NHM. However, as soon as Berkeley completes their current hardware upgrade a US PaleoNet Pages site will open at Berkeley. This should make response and download times much faster for North American paleontologists. That's it for now. Let's all cross our fingers and hope this works.
