As an editor of the Valentine book to which Richard Cowen was invited to contribute his paper, I can attest that all manuscripts were sent for peer review before acceptance. The papers were then sent back to the authors for revision. The entire assembled volume was sent to reviewers by the publisher, The University of Chicago Press. Then there will be another opportunity for revision and corrections based on these reviews. The book is scheduled for publication this fall. I am not sure I am comfortable with Richard making his work available in advance of the whole book. However, he has been careful in setting up the rules of use, so maybe it is okay. My concern is that the book has a bunch of related papers that maybe should be seen together. But it will take until next fall to get the book manufactured, so it may be a service to the profession to get the ideas out so that replies or extensions of the concepts can be crafted sooner rather than later. Since time does matter in the development of scientific thought, I'd go along with Richard's choice--hesitantly. Jere Jere H.
