From: Hilary Clement Olson 76141.33@compuserve.com 4 January, 1996 On December 26, 1995, Martin B. Lagoe passed away after a valiant fight with Lymphoma. Martin's many friends, though saddened at his premature passing, have rallied together to establish a student research fund in Martin's honor. The Martin B. Lagoe Student Research Fund for Micropaleontology is directed at sustaining Martin's efforts in building a micropaleontology program at the University of Texas at Austin. Our goal is to raise $20,000 in hopes that annual grants can be made to outstanding students in stratigraphic and environmental micropaleontology. We were very fortunate to receive sufficient commitments for the Student Research Fund before Christmas, enabling Martin to receive a letter on December 22 from Dr. William Fisher, Geology Foundation Chair, announcing the establishment of the Martin B. Lagoe Student Research Fund for Micropaleontology. Martin was deeply moved by this expression of love and professional admiration. This fund, for the support of student research in the field of micropaleontology, is managed by the Geology Foundation at the University of Texas at Austin. The contributions will earn interest in an account available for annual awards to students recommended by a committee of paleontologists and stratigraphers. The capital will be held by the Geology Foundation assuring long term support for Micropaleontology at the University of Texas at Austin. We invite you to consider making a contribution in honor of Martin. Contributions can be mailed to: Martin B. Lagoe Student Research Fund for Micropaleontology c/o Geology Foundation Department of Geological Sciences University Station PO Box B Austin, Texas 78713 U.S.A. As an educational foundation, the Geology Foundation is eligible for matching fund programs offered by many employers. Please consider this opportunity to maximize your contribution and accelerate reaching the endowment goal. We hope that you will join us in honoring our colleague and supporting micropaleontology.
