The concept is not all that incredible.  Given the rate of supernova 
explosions in the galaxy, the probability that one blew up relatively
near to the earth is fairly high.  Of course, what effects is would
have on the biota is speculative.  BTW, the original EOS abstract
of the Alavarez hypothesis suggested a supernova, rather than a
