Heinz, To access most public ftp sites, type "anonymous" at the login prompt, then type your e-mail address at the password prompt (better communications software allows you to construct scripts or macros which will automate this process). Here's an example of accessing the paleonet ftp site: ------------------------------------------------------------------- [4]quartz:/home/quartz/florin% ftp ftp.nhm.ac.uk Connected to mailserver.nhm.ac.uk. 220-If you have problems displaying the directory messages put a "-" before 220-your password. NCSA ftp as used in the Museum cannot deal with these 220-messages. 220- 220 mailserver FTP server (Version wu-2.4(1) Tue May 17 10:51:23 BST 1994) ready. Name (ftp.nhm.ac.uk:florin): anonymous 331 Guest login ok, send your complete e-mail address as password.
