Re: PaleoNet Digests???

Heinz,

To access most public ftp sites, type "anonymous" at the login prompt,
then type your e-mail address at the password prompt (better
communications software allows you to construct scripts or macros
which will automate this process).

Here's an example of accessing the paleonet ftp site:

-------------------------------------------------------------------
[4]quartz:/home/quartz/florin% ftp ftp.nhm.ac.uk
Connected to mailserver.nhm.ac.uk.
220-If you have problems displaying the directory messages put a "-" before
220-your password. NCSA ftp as used in the Museum cannot deal with these
220-messages.
220-
220 mailserver FTP server (Version wu-2.4(1) Tue May 17 10:51:23 BST 1994) ready.
Name (ftp.nhm.ac.uk:florin): anonymous
331 Guest login ok, send your complete e-mail address as password.
Password:
230-This is the Natural History Museum ftp server.

230-Local time is Wed Nov 16 14:39:51 1994.
230-
230-Hello from quartz.geology.utoronto.ca ! you are user number 2 of a possible 10.
230-
230-The address of this machine is : ftp.nhm.ac.uk if you have any problems
230-please mail to : S.Steppie@nhm.ac.uk
230-
230-PLEASE NOTE: all transfers are logged and the server will force you to
230- enter a correct RFC822 mail address as the anonymous password.
230-
230-Please read the file README
230- it was last modified on Thu Jul 7 14:17:14 1994 - 132 days ago
230 Guest login ok, access restrictions apply.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Note that I typed "anonymous" at the "Name:" prompt; when the
"Password" prompt appeared I typed my complete e-mail address (which
wasn't echoed, as it was interepreted as a password.

With minor variations, this works for most ftp sites.
