On the contrary, the aphorism is very often used to
excuse people from having to accept that something is
absent when they don't want to, but the evidence
indicates they should. Yes IN PALAEONTOLOGY!  It's one
of the ways in which they've managed to be so dead
wrong so very often.

Even if it seldom happened, I'm surprised you should
say "No one said..."
