You might want to look at Dan McShea's papers http://www.biology.duke.edu/mcshealab/.

Thanks.  He was interviewed in Lewin's book.

Also see, for fun: http://www.biota.org/

Fun indeed.

A Cambrian Explosion on the internet?

We speculate that some time in this new century that Digital Biota may undergo a Cambrian Explosion of diversification within the novel ecosystem of the planet's computer networks. We believe that the richest ecosystems, with the greatest selection pressures, are multi-user virtual worlds.

Has anyone considered looking at the World Wide Web as an analog to the Cambrian Explosion?  Are the data available to reconstruct how quickly different types of websites developed since the WWW was made public in 1991?

P.S. Whatever "intelligent designer" came up with my back and knees should be fired for incompetence!

Well, heteromorph ammonites show a designer with a sense of humor anyway.
