An interesting example of the fruitfulness of combining neo-paleo approaches is a recent (1999) deep submersible expedition by the Smithsonian to collect live Pleurotomariids, or slit-shell snails (>1500 species but <30 extant), in the Bahamas. Of course things always come out best when we can all be friends. It often takes high-minded and good-natured ambassadors and translators, however, to bridge the cultural differences that exist between fields (or countries, see second link below). http://www.mnh.si.edu/livingfossils/defaulthome.htm http://www.si.edu/opa/researchreports/9683/9683vist.htm ____________________________ John F.
