An interesting example of the fruitfulness of combining neo-paleo
approaches is a recent (1999) deep submersible expedition by the
Smithsonian to collect live Pleurotomariids, or slit-shell snails (>1500
species but <30 extant), in the Bahamas.  Of course things always come out
best when we can all be friends.  It often takes high-minded  and
good-natured ambassadors and translators, however, to bridge the cultural
differences that exist between fields (or countries, see second link
below).
