A PhD position in micropaleontology is available at the Geology Department of the Natural History Museum Basel, Switzerland. APPLICATION DEADLINE: 20 September 2002 (email applications accepted) In the framework of the new research project "Speciation of marine planktonic microfossils during the Cenozoic" a PhD position is available at the Natural History Museum in Basel, Switzerland. The goal is to investigate the geographic and temporal shell variability and ontogeny of selected Miocene through Holocene planktonic foraminifers by means of digital image analysis, and to obtain quantitative models about the microevolution of shell producing marine protists. The project is funded by the Swiss National Foundation for Scientific Research for 36 months, beginning on 1 October, 2002. Your specific tasks: Morphometry of foraminiferal shells from selected deep-sea holes and quantitative analysis of microevolutionary patterns. X-ray imaging of planktic foraminifers and ontogenetic studies. Development of new measurement/analysis tools within the software library of Nih-Image. Development of an computer-driven stage for orientation of microfossils under a binocular. Your profile: A prerequisite for this position is a recent master's degree or diploma in earth sciences or biology. You are curious and highly motivated in solving questions about microevolutionary patterns and processes of marine microfossils. You are especially interested in development of digital image based morphometry and automation. You have knowledge in statistical techniques and programming (Pascal, Fortran are a plus). You have good knowledge of English (written and spoken). You will be registered as a Ph.D. student with the University of Basel, Switzerland. The position is based at the Natural History Museum in Basel, Switzerland. For more information please contact Dr. Michael Knappertsbusch, Tel.
