Dear Dan, I do not know, if Boomgaardia was ever formally revised, but few weeks ago Helmut Hölder, who worked in Tuebingen during the study of that fossil, now 87 years old and still active, told me an interesting story, that F. v. Huene was so specialized in vertebrates, that he even described the crushed specimen of a Recent insect as a salamander! Hence, Boomgaardia salamandroides is not even a fossil! In the late 1940s F.v. Huene described a new genus of salamander ( Boomgardia salamandroides) from the Dogger. He illustrates (poorly) the part and counterpart of the skeleton in his Fig. 1. The back half of the specimen looks like an arthropod, with a segmented abdomen and a terminal telson. The front end is crushed, but Huene believed he could see skull bones and illustrates them and gives a reconstruction of the skull in dorsal and ventral views (!). I have checked the systematic listings in both Romer's 1966 Vertebrate Paleontology and Carroll's 1984 Vertebrate Paleontology and Evolution. Neither have Boomgardia listed, even as a junior synonym. Does anyone know of any other studies on this specimen that might have confirmed Boomgardia as an amphibian or an invertebrate?
