paleonet IPC2002 Forum: Palaeontology, a way ahead?

This just in from Andrew Simpson

----------

Dear Palaeonetters,

Recently we have seen pleas for help from colleagues on this list.
They feel our science is threatened in these changing times.

With the advent of the First International Palaeontological Congress
in Sydney in July this year, we have an opportunity to do a global
stocktake on the status of our science and explore possibilities for
the future. Around 450 palaeontologists from 35 nations will be
attending. For those we won't be seeing in Sydney, the reach of this
list will provide a wider voice among professional scientists and all
with an interest in the future of palaeontology.

IPC2002 will be conducting an open forum on the above topic at the
Australian Museum on the night of Monday July 8. For those coming to
Sydney we're interested to hear how palaeontology is faring in your
country and especially, what are the opportunities for our science?
We'd like to hear from any IPC2002 delegate who would be willing to
briefly report on the state of play at the forum.

For those not attending IPC2002, we would also like to hear comments
that can then be presented to the forum.

Most importantly this gathering will be a unique opportunity to share
information about positive and innovative programs in your country
that are helping expanding the boundaries of our science, giving
palaeontology greater cultural significance, or generally extending
its reach into the public domain. We can surely learn from each
other and help develop a momentum that will advance our science in
the new millenium.

Should the results of the forum be truly inspirational and, given the
collective wisdom and insights of the palaeontological community, we
are sure they will be, we will move towards some form of web-based
publication that will be available to all as a snapshot of current
thinking at the time of IPA's first international meeting.

Over to you!
