PhD Position in Vertebrate Paleontology, University of Bonn, Germany A PhD position in Vertebrate Paleontology is available beginning January 1st, 2002, for research on the phylogeny and fossil record of the Ichthyosauria. The position is for a maximum of three years (stipend of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, about DM 24,000 p.a.) and comes with a travel allowance to attend meetings and visit collections as well as a supplies budget. The goal of this project is to compare the stratigraphic record of the ichthyosaurs with their phylogeny by refining existing phylogenies and comparing their fit to the fossil record with statistical methods. The ultimate aim is develop new quantitative numerical methods for using the fossil record as a test for character-based phylogenies. Requirements - experience in character-based phylogenetic analysis and/or quantitative methods in stratigraphy, appropriate prior training, preferably in paleontology or stratigraphy, ability to work quantitatively, using statistical methods in stratigraphy and phylogenetic analysis. Fluency in spoken and written English is required. The successful PhD applicant will be expected, in addition to her/his own research,to assist Graduate College staff in improving communication within the College, e.g., by helping to organize workshops and informal seminars.
