     Industry Biostratigraphy Coordinators Meeting
     Amoco Earth Sciences Lab
     11611 West Little York
     Monday, March 3rd, 1997
     10:00 AM to 3:00 PM

     Agenda

Amoco Earth Sciences Laboratories (ESL) Services Presentation
     - A. M. Gabriel

Alvin Gabriel advised the group that Amoco will be opening the
facilities of its Earth Sciences Laboratories (ESL) to non-Amoco
customers. These services include: core and cuttings layout
facilities, SEM, rock photography/digital imaging, paleontological
sample preparation for foraminifera, calcareous nannofossils,
palynology, diatoms, siliceous microfossils, conodonts, and
     paleontological thin-sections (including oriented specimen
thin-sections) Anyone requiring additional details or wishing to talk
to Alvin about any specific needs or concerns may contact him at:
     (281) 366 - 5221 or via E-mail at alvin_m_gabriel@amoco.com

Funding Request GOM Modern Environments of Deposition
     - John Anderson, Chip Carney, Rich Lane, Jennifer Snow

John Anderson and Jennifer Snow from Rice University gave a
presentation of their ongoing data collection and reasearch regarding
the seismic stratigraphy/facies analysis of the shallow seismic
reflectors of the Texas and Louisiana coastal and offshore GOM and its
relationship to lithofacies and biofacies of the modern. The principals
discussed the status of the work to date and future directions. Rich
Lane and Chip Carney reviewed the results of Amoco work aimed at
developing an understanding of modern coastal and offshore biofacies.
These results were integrated with those from the seismic study in an
effort to begin to develop predictive tools.

Following these reviews Rich Lane led the group in a discussion of the
value of this sort of fundamental work and a discussion of funding and
other logistical concerns for these sorts of projects. This discussion
was continued under the JIP item.

Orphan Collections Meeting / IBC Meeting at AAPG
     - Rich Lane

     Notice to Orphan Activists/Advocates

I have scheduled an Orphaned Collections Meeting at AAPG for 2-5PM on
Saturday, April 5 in the Travis Room of the Adams Mark Hotel (formerly
Harvey Hotel) in Dallas. SEPM has been gracious enough to allow us a
room for 20 people cost free. Please plan to attend. Several of the
Industry Biostratigraphy Group are planning to be there and so it
should be well attended. An agenda follows. Let me know if you want
to add to or change this agenda.

     AGENDA
     ORPHANED COLLECTIONS GROUP

Travis Room, Adams Mark Hotel, Dallas, Texas

     1. Rich Lane: Review of the Industry Collections study done last
Spring and reported on at our first meeting.

     2. Mark Frye, Senior Manager, KPMG Peat Marwick, Base Closure
     Specialist/Environmental
Geologist/Paleontologist will discuss U. S. Military Base Closure and
Conversion Process, including Community Reuse Planning, Property
Transfer, and Environmental Cleanup associated with property Transfer.

     3. Marcus Milling: AGI core storage project.

     4. Mike Dumont and Bruce Wardlaw: Long term funding ideas for the
     Orphaned Collection Project.

Are there any special requirements that any of you have? Are there
other agenda items to be added? Please send your comments and/or
     concerns to Rich Lane at:

     Update Company "Operational Styles" matrix
     - Lori Glassgold, Sheila Barnett

Lori reviewed her tabulation of our data from the previous meeting. We
are awaiting the contributions of several other company
     representatives before finalizing the document.

     Potential JIP Biostratigraphy/Paleoenvironmental Projects
     - Ron Waszczak

Ron lead a discussion on the topic of Joint Interest Projects in
Biostratigraphy/Paleoenvironments. The discussion focused on the
logistics of and funding vehicles for such projects.

     Background:
At the January 17 meeting of the IBC, I (Ron W.) introduced for
consideration the concept of IBC sponsored and administered joint
industry projects (JIPs) in bio-stratigraphy technology development
(TD). Potential projects would address issues of keen interest to the
Group, specifically maintaining and building industrial and academic
expertise in 1) the taxonomy of industry-significant microfossil
groups, 2) bio-stratigraphical quantitative methods and applications,
and 3) stratigraphic interpretation that integrates bio-stratigraphy.

Introduced for consideration was a prototype for a series of projects,
"biofacies attributes of sequence-keyed clastic depositional systems",
where there is apparent potential for landmark advances in
bio-sequence stratigraphy. The mission: to study microfossil
biofacies to understand processes of paleoenvironment, sedimentology
and taphonomy as related to sequence stratigraphy, and to groundtruth
calibration of biofacies to depositional systems tracts. Sites of
work for any single project could be a network of organizations.

     Result of Discussion:
The group agreed on the need for funded project work in paleontology
that advanced these goals. We could not identify a mechanism whereby
the the IBC in its current structure would be the appropriate body to
fund and/or administer these efforts. We identified a number of
issues/concerns/barriers/boundary conditions that would need to be
considered/addressed/resolved for such efforts to go forward. Advocacy
and awareness of ongoing or planned projects within our own companies
and the opportunity for several companies to fund work independently
     seemed the likely vehicle.

1997 Goals and Future Plans Beyond 1997
     - Group

This item was deferred until our next meeting pending additional input
on the "Operational Styles" summary and a more representative
     attendance.

     NEXT MEETING:

Thursday May 1, 1997 at Pennzoil
