DEAKIN UNIVERSITY,
School of Aquatic Science and Natural Resources Management
ARC-supported Ph.D. Scholarship: Biostratigraphy and Palaeoecology
Stipend: $14,500 (Australian dollars) p.a.
(TO START IMMEDIATELY)
We are looking for an outstanding student with an Earth Science
and/or biology background to undertake a Ph.D. project on
the Permian invertebrate palaeontology and palaeoecology of the Sydney
Basin in eastern Australia under the supervision of Dr. G. R. Shi and
Professor N. W. Archbold. This project is supported by the
Australian Research Council.
The project is aimed to provide a refined biostratigraphical
framework for the Permian of Sydney Basin through detailed
description and stratigraphical analysis of a key Permian invertebrate
fossil group (eg., Foraminifera, Brachiopoda, Mollusca, or Bryozoa).
Stratigraphical, palaeoecological and sedimentological data will be
integrated to interpret the Permian depositional environments critical
to the understanding of the basin evolution and resources exploration of the
Sydney Basin.
This project will require field work in the Sydney Basin,
institutional visits (including overseas institutions) and
extensive comparative work with Russian and Chinese Permian fossil material.
The Palaeontology research group within the School of Aquatic
Science and Natural Resources Management is regarded as one
of the most active research groups within Deakin in terms of
competitive research grants received and research output and currently hosts
6 Ph.D. candidates (including 2 overseas fee-paying students)
working on a range of stratigraphical, palaeontological and/or
sedimentological projects.
Applications:
Please send a letter of application to Dr. Guang R. Shi at the
following address, together with a curriculum vitae, transcript
of academic record, and the names and contact addresses (email addresses
