Open PhD Position (reposted for H. Hilbrecht)

----start-----------
Research Assistant Position (PhD Candidate)

A research position for a doctoral student in paleoceanography is
available for 3 years as of October 1, 1996.

The thesis project to be undertaken is part of the international CANIGO
(Canary Islands Azores Gibraltar Observations) Project funded within the
Marine Science and Technology Programme (MAST III) of the European
Commission (EC). We are, as Associated Partners, involved in Subproject 3:
Particle flux and paleoceanography in the Eastern Boundary Current System.

The goal of the thesis project is to reconstruct the paleoceanographic and
particle flux histories through the last two glacial/interglacial cycles
from a series of deep-sea cores to be taken in December 1996 along an
E-W-transect across the continental margin north of the Canary Islands.

Methods to be used are grain-size analysis, stable isotope stratigraphy,
coccolith stratigraphy and AMS carbon-14 dating. For the paleoceanographic
reconstructions a novel transfer-function technique is to be developed and
applied using coccolith morphology (SEM image analyses), which will be
calibrated in samples from the living plankton).

Interaction with local scientists and those at the European partner
institutions is expected.

Qualified candidates with a diploma or masters degree in geology,
oceanography, paleontology, or environmental sciences are invited to send
their applications with the usual documentation (C.V., grades, names and
addresses of 3 referees, publication list) to: Hans R. Thierstein,
Geological Institute, ETH-Zentrum, Sonneggstr. 5, CH-8092 Z¸rich,
Switzerland. Phone: -41-1-632-3666; fax: -41-1-632-1051; e-mail:
