Invertebrate Paleontologist
The University announces 12-month tenure-track position starting Aug. 1,
1997 for Assistant/Associate Curator of Invertebrate Paleontology in
Oklahoma Museum of Natural History and Assistant/Associate Professor in
School of Geology & Geophysics. Person selected will have available
state-of-the-art facilities in School of Geology and Geophysics housed in
Sarkeys Energy Center and in new Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural
History now under construction. Salary commensurate with experience.
We seek dynamic individual with commitment to develop research and
teaching programs that use fossils to examine questions of broad
significance in paleobiology, biostratigraphy, and evolutionary biology.
Successful candidate will be faculty member in School, engaging in
activities such as: teaching (one course/year); graduate-student
supervision; thesis and dissertation committee participation; and research
in his/her specialty area. As Museum curator, individual has
responsibilities in scholarly research, collection care, and interpretation.
Curator expected to conduct original research and make results available to
scientific community and public through publication, presentations at
scientific meetings, and work with other specialists. Curator has primary
responsibility to ensure adequate care of collections, including
implementation of museum collections policies, object
preservation/conservation, record maintenance, object identification and
cataloguing, supervision of preparators and assistants, and collection
expansion and development. Curator assists in interpretation of his/her
discipline to students and the public, working with museum's exhibit and
education staff to design and create displays, and to provide public
programs and instructional aids.
Ph.D. required. Successful applicant must demonstrate: (1) mastery of
invertebrate paleontology as shown by research productivity through
published scholarly works, record of funded research (or high potential for
funding), and participation in professional societies; (2) collection care
and management skills as demonstrated through prior work with repository
collections, assembling of collections, or use of collections; (3)
interpretive skills as shown by experience in display work, public
programming, public speaking, or related activities requiring effective
written and oral communication; (4) teaching skills as shown through
previous teaching experience.
Screening begins on Dec. 2, 1996, continuing until position filled.
