I was at a talk on terrestrial impacts some years back where
the speaker (it may have been Fred Whipple) suggested, or
speculated that most if not all crustal movement and hot spots
(Hawaiian Is. chain, Iceland, etc.) could be attributed to
impact of large bodies. Has this idea gained any credence? -Rik
