At risk of re-opening a discussion on bolides, I have a request for information regarding the break-up of Gondwana. I have a newspaper clipping from 1992 in which Michael Rampino is quoted as saying that Asteroid impacts about 250 million years ago near Tierra del Fuego might have been the trigger for the subsequent split up of Gondwana. According to the report this was presented at a meeting of the American Geophysical Union. Does anyone know whether this has been published? There is a hint of it in Duncan Steel's (1995) book "Rogue Asteroids and Doomsday Comets", which made me go searching for the newspaper clipping, but not enough to go on. This book, by the way, is an excellent presentation of an astronomer's view of the debate on extraterrestrial impacts. If no-one has any information on this, can someone send me Michael Rampino's email address? Bob Hill Plant Science University of Tasmania Australia
