I'd appreciate it if you could distribute this note to the paleo group
because I think that some members might enjoy hearing the lecture.

On Thursday, April 25th, the University of Chicago Club Distinguished
Faculty Series will present Dr. Michael LaBarbera speaking on "Insight
in the Late Night: The Biology of Science Fiction Movie Monsters."
The lecture will begin at 6:30 PM at the Briar Club located at 2603
Timmons (near River Oaks). The cost is $8.00 per adult and $5.00 per
student. You may make a reservation through me, Carol Kazmer
(x5654--I'm an officer in the local Chicago alumni group), before the
end of day on April 22nd.

Dr. LaBarbera holds joint appointments in the departments of
Organismal Biology and Anatomy, and the Geophysical Sciences, as well
as in the Committee on Evolutionary Biology, and the College. He is
widely recognized for his work on designing science curricula for
nonscientists, and was one of twenty scientists in America chosen to
be a Sigma-Xi National Lecturer from 1989-91. His scholarly interests
focus on comparative biomechanics, particularly physical constraints
on the evolutionary process. Fieldwork has taken him to Africa,
Jamaica, Fiji, and the San Juan Islands. At home, in front of the TV,
Mike has applied his scholarly insight to those B-movie science
fiction creatures that populate the midnight airwaves. His thoughts
on movie monsters, dinosaurs, and the mechanical consequence of size
will be featured in a new PBS series "M: The Mathematical Universe",
     to be aired this year.

     Thanks.

     Carol Kazmer
