I am not sure where the quote regarding our fossils stored in the Sather
Tower at Berkeley came from (I hope not our Museum of Paleo WWW--better the
Campus WWW), but it is not only poorly written but wrong in part.

The Museum of Paleontology has 4 of the 5 floors in the Tower which is one
of our 3 auxilliary storage facilities. Mostly we store Rancho La Brea
materials there, plus bulk microfossil samples and some other misc.
materials that could include dinosaurs (but I don't think so--I'm sure my
staff will correct me if I am wrong).

Most importantly, NO human remains are stored in the Tower or in the Museum
of Paleontology. This is a continuing error that could bring some
undeserved problems to us, if repeated widely, in terms of return of human
remains and artifacts to native tribes. As I understand it, all human
remains and artifacts at Berkeley are being dealt with or have been dealt
with according to Federal legislation by the Hearst Anthropological Museum,
which does house such items.

Incidentally, a native American skeleton (female) was recovered from La
Brea. I think it dated at 7000 BP. A nice display of it is at the Page
Museum at La Brea.

Thanks for calling all this to our attention. I'll run down where the WWW
error is and get it changed.

Jere
