To quash some rumour-mongering....there was and is no effort in the 
vetebrate palaeontological community to regulate any kind of collecting 
on private lands. This issue did not arise at the SVP meetings in any 
context, and no proposed legislation in the US addresses anything but the 
very real issues of private collecting on public lands. Unfounded rumours 
can do a lot of damage. Since the correspondent was not at the meetings, 
he should check his facts carefully before posting. There is a great deal 
of attention being paid to recognising the concerns of responsible 
avocational collectors. Please, next time, check the facts and skip the 
rhetoric. Cheers.
