To quash some rumour-mongering....there was and is no effort in the vetebrate palaeontological community to regulate any kind of collecting on private lands. This issue did not arise at the SVP meetings in any context, and no proposed legislation in the US addresses anything but the very real issues of private collecting on public lands. Unfounded rumours can do a lot of damage. Since the correspondent was not at the meetings, he should check his facts carefully before posting. There is a great deal of attention being paid to recognising the concerns of responsible avocational collectors. Please, next time, check the facts and skip the rhetoric. Cheers.
