FLORAS AND FAUNAS THEME WORKSHOP
ON INTERNATIONAL CODE OF ZOOLOGICAL NOMENCLATURE
SECOND ANNOUNCEMENT
The International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature is proposing
a new edition of the Code which regulates the scientific names of all
animal taxa. A draft of the Code has been issued recently and the ICZN
is inviting comments from taxonomists and others worldwide. The proposed
new edition presents a thoroughly revised Code but in contrast to the
last edition contains some drastic and controversial changes and in
many cases leaves the individual to a "Do It Yourself" approach.
As outlined in the first announcement a workshop will be organized
to discuss these proposed changes and to make suggestions. The meeting
will take place on FRIDAY NOVEMBER 24TH at 10.00 A.M. in the PALAEO DEMO
ROOM and will take the whole day.
In the light of the replies to the first announcement the following working
agenda is suggested:
10.00 Welcome [by R. Fortey - chair of the meeting]
10.05 Recording of new names in Zoological Record within 5 years of
their publication as a requirement for availability
11.00 Language to be adopted for new diagnoses: linguistic freedom or
criterion for availability?
11.30 Gender of generic names: possible abandonment
12.00 Lunch break: a glass of wine and some light refreshments will be
offered by the organizers
13.00 Stability vs Priority: conservation of junior synonyms and
incorrect subsequent spellings
14.30 Typification: - acceptance of misidentified name-bearing
types
- status of neotype upon rediscovery of original
types
14.50 Formation of family-group names
15.00 Tea and coffee break
15.10 Adoption of lists of available and potentially valid names
15.30 Towards a possible "Unified" (botany, bacteriology, zoology)
Code of Bionomenclature for future names?
16.00 Any other business
16.30 Closing of the meeting
For colleagues to whom the concept of a possible future Unified Code
of Bionomenclature is unknown, more information can be found in:
