In response to Roy Plotnick's question about expert system / neural network
approaches to classifying fossils:
I've not done anything with neural networks, but if I had such an objective
I'd try a procedure called "rough set analysis". A couple of recent
references are -
Slowinski, R. 1995. Rough set approach to decision analysis. AI Expert,
March 1995, pp.19-25.
Rapoport, J. 1995. Rough sets: the boundaries of knowledge. PC AI,
March/April 1995, pp.35-38. [This article also provides information on a
software tool for implementing the procedure.]
Many introductory articles on neural network applications appeared in AI
Expert and PC AI from 1988 to 1991. Notable series of papers are those by
Maureen Caudill comprising a "Neural Networks Primer" and then "Using Neural
Nets". And beginning in the Jan./Feb. issue of PC AI, C.C. Klimasauskas has
a series of articles on "Applying Neural Networks".
