We solved the problem of the picking trays by having our workshop make some up for us. They were made with the black German tray as a model but are made of aluminium and are green with aluminium-coloured lines outlining the squares. We chose green on purpose as many of our Australian conodont faunas have a high CAI....we can see them better. (We also have green plastic moulded slides to pick into - 3-holers. We talked the manufacturer into using green colour in the plastic rather than black or white!). The honey- coloured conodonts (very few, unfortunately) also stand out. We let our postgrads have the trays for $20...... Many of our postgrads are part-timers so need to have they trays at home. I think the workshop cuts the aluminium blanks and sends them out to be coated. They then join the corners and put a thin felt base on them. We gave up using the ones with the holes a long time ago... we pick straight into the slides, but our workshop made the ones with the holes for us, too, some years back... If you can get your university workshop to have a go at making them for you, let me know and I'll send you one of ours as a sample. Good luck and cheers...... Ruth Mawson
