The mystery of the doubled messages is easily solved. As was posted just
after the infamous PaleoNet bounce loop, PaleoNet has temporarily changed
its reply default to insure that no similar bounce loops occur. The
current reply default routes messages to me. When I get a message that
comes from someone hitting the "Reply" button on their e-mail software, I
pass it along to the entire list. You can always tell which messages have
come through me because even though my e-mail address is attached to them,
I always include a (from ...) in the subject line. On occasion I screw up
and route a message back to the list that was copied to the list by the
original author (usually as a cc: that I overlooked). Given the volume of
messages on PaleoNet I don't think this happens too often, but I apologize
in advance for any inconvenience or confusion this generates. This
situation is only temporary, until we can get adequate bounce-loop
safeguards in place. By unfortunate coincidence, however, the NHM is
currently searching for a new computer network manager and no progress will
be able to be made on any PaleoNet listserver modifications until that
position has been filled. Still, a few doubled messages every now and then
are definitely better than experiencing another bounce loop. I'd just like
to close by reminding everyone that when replying to a PaleoNet message
they should make sure that the message is being sent to the PaleoNet
listserver address...
PaleoNet@nhm.ac.uk
That way the message will go directly to the list without first having to
come through me. If the reply is addressed to PaleoNet-owner@nhm.ac.uk it
will come to me first (which is something I think we all want to avoid).
