I'm sure there are other more recent papers out by now but see:
Melosh, H. J. et al, 1990. Ignition of global wildfires at the
Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary. Nature, v. 343, 18 Jan. 1990
And there are other papers that I can't recall right now that have found soot
in the boundary clay.
